Transcription: Antietam National Battlefield is located near Sharpsburg, Maryland, roughly 50 air miles northwest of Washington, D.C. In early September 1862, General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army invaded the North. General George B. McClellan's Federal forces met Lee at Antietam. Early in the battle there, Confederates had taken up positions in the area around the Dunker Church. The Federals attacked and drove them off with huge losses.
